Artist Focus

Artist Focus: Kristen Freeborn

Kristen Freeborn began her career as a Western artist in 2018 when she first decided to try painting. She knew immediately that she had found her medium. Until that time, she had created pencil drawings of things that interested her as an occasional hobby. She was soon developing her skills through study and private workshops.

A Journey and a Dream, oil on linen, 14 x 14 in.

As a horsewoman from the Central Valley of California, it’s not surprising that horses showed up in her work from the beginning. Growing up, she had spent much of her time in the area surrounding her grandmother’s home. It was there that she developed her love of horses, cattle and the Western landscape.

Runaway Horses, oil on canvas, 22 x 28 in.

Much of her work is inspired by her time on the trail with her horse Penny, as well as time spent in the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains and deserts. She can be found working both in her studio and in plein air. Freeborn is drawn to and participates in many Western-themed art events across the United States.

Pushing the Herd to Tinnemeha, oil on linen, 24 x 30 in.

She has received first and third place awards at The Great Western Art Show in Kernville, California; was a participant in the SLOPOKE Western Art Show in Solvang, California; and in the Art 2024 Tehachapi, also in California.

The artist will have her work on view at the Art 2025 Tehachapi show on November 15 in Tehachapi. Learn more about the show at www.artstehachapi.org.
